A Good Friday Letter to Mr Bin Laden
by Ken John

Mr Bin Laden,

Now that you find yourself a war criminal, in exile from your people and on the run and in hiding from your enemies, I wonder what you are planning next?

What you consider and ponder on at night may be of some interest to the average man, mystified by the cold calculation of suicidal mass murder. No doubt you work at maintaining and perfecting the religious dogma by which you justify your own and Al Qaeda's terrorist activities. Perhaps at times you remember, with a plethora (no, a cacophony) of concomitant emotions, that you have done much to activate others to sacrifice themselves in suicidal acts of mass murder?

Of this hideous act: the instigation and encouragement of suicides and mass murders; perhaps the one good thing that may be said is to comment on the weird and distorted self-sacrifice required to carry out these heinous crimes. So, these misguided crimes against humanity, nevertheless contain a faint element of a real good deed. How cunning the counterfeit! Only the self sacrifice, albeit selfish and self serving and downright evil and wrong nevertheless apes the genuine article, modelled by our Maker Himself!

In a strange way, these practitioners of suicidal murder, at one with the rest of humanity, only in that they too were made in the image of God, are ironically capable of reflecting a little bit of the very nature of God in that they choose to lay down their own lives, albeit for a false, spurious and unspeakably destructive and wicked "reward". These dark deeds are done for idealistic, deceiving, abstract and diabolical reasons.

In contrast with this high ideal resulting in most horrible murder, it is true that supreme and true self-sacrifice is modeled by God toward mankind; and in his divine perfection, the LORD provides us with a jewel of truth, namely that God chose to lay down his life for his enemies!

The kingdoms of this world speak much of killing their enemies and even of killing God's enemies. But the King of heaven laid down his own life for his enemies, only to take it up again in triumphant resurrection power!

Since the Lord of all creation has already sacrificed himself for the wicked, laying down his own life in selfless self-sacrifice, let us pay honor to the Living God and uphold this great tradition of God's Kingdom, that is, selfless self-sacrifice. The purpose of the selfless act is to show mercy and compassion and to give the gift of mercy and free pardon to those who might in all other ways, be our enemies.

Since this supreme mercy is what even the worst of all human beings is offered by God, let us therefore also, in weak and perhaps bumbling endeavor, but depending on the redemptive and gracious power of God's own selfless and Holy Spirit, let us aim in our own small ways, to do like-wise. Amen

Yours sincerely,
