1 Timothy 2:2
by Don Costello 1 Timothy 2:2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. 1. "For kings, and for all that are in authority" a. As Covenant people we need to realize that civil government is an institution created by God. 1). Romans 13:1-7 "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? Do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye needs be subject, not only for wrath, but for conscience sake. For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour. 2). The Apostle Peter also gives wisdom on our behavior toward God ordained civil government. a). 1 Peter 2:13-17 "Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king." 2. "that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty." a. One of the implications of this part of the verse is the salvation of government leaders, for kings and those in authority over us. This is made clear I think in the next two verses, 1Timothy 2:3, 4. b. Another implication though is the effect of prayer on us. 1). Philippians 4:6, 7 "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." c. If we pray according to his will not only does he hear us, but we have what we pray. 1). 1 John 5:14, 15 "And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him."
