FATHERS
by willetta pilcher

Fathers! Men facing nearly insurmountable odds at times to fulfill their responsibility and they do it with determination.

They've taken a beating in society. They've been portrayed as weak, as wimpish, self-indulgent, lazy, drunken sots, sex-crazed, and almost any other unsavory characteristic of which one can think. And of course there are those who fit the scenario but I find, as I look around, that most men do not fit those categories. I suppose it all depends on where you look but this is what I see.

God-fearing men. Men who stand strong for righteousness. Men who aren't afraid to carry their Bibles although worn from frequent use. Men who aren't afraid to kneel at an altar and weep over their errant loved ones. Men who pray with their wives and children. Men who give testimony, by the stability of their lives, to a relationship with the Lord Jesus.

Sacrificial men. Men who go to work day in and day out over thirty, forty, even fifty years of their lives without complaint. Men who do without the toys of other men so that their children may have the very best. Men who give their daughters in wedlock with finesse and pride. Men who work extra long hours so their family may have whatever is needed and beyond. Men who spend time with the family instead of doing what they might find personally enjoyable.

Brave men. Men who are proud to serve their country. Men who stand tall and salute the flag and all for which it stands. Men who give honor where honor is due. Men who proudly lay a wreath on the grave of a fallen comrade and remember, often with tears. Men who aren't big on words but who would fight a buzz saw for those whom they love. Men who chase non-existent monsters out of closets and kill spiders. Men who aren't afraid to say "No." Men who protect at all costs.

Gentle men. Men who have rough calloused hands but hold a tiny baby with gentle tenderness. Men who rock babies so Mom can have a few extra minutes rest. Men who take time to play with their kids in rough and tumble play without ever hurting a single one. Men who show courtesy to their wives and teach their sons to do likewise. Men who respect women and set the example. Men who hold their wives and appreciate their contribution to the well-being of their lives.

Aged men. Men who have stood the test of time. Men who have made mistakes and been more than willing to admit their faults. Men who make wonderful grandfathers and encouragers of the young. Men who are willing to take the young boys fishing and buy ice cream cones on a hot summer day. Men who take walks with little girls and show them the beauties of nature.

Men of conviction. Men who stand up for what they believe. Men who have moral standards and refuse to give into whims of the flesh. Men who believe that there is some good in everyone. Men who are willing to sow time into the lives of other men so that they might become men of integrity.

1Pe 2:17 Honor all men.
