They Splash in the Ocean
by Sherrie Coronas

I watch as they live the way free children can,
They splash in the ocean, frolic in the sand.

Peace slips from my soul when quite out of the blue,
I stare into history and wonder about you.

I see you in the water as I focus through my lens,
You are one among thousands, one among kin.

But who were you my friend on that blood soaked beach?
What lessons did we learn, what lessons did you teach?

That day of all days with your brothers in arms,
Deep down inside, was there calm or alarm?

Did you feel the crowd or did you feel all alone,
You stormed up the beach, only bravery shown.

The advantage was theirs, perched up on the wall,
There was no way around it, so many would fall.

You were hit, it was bad, I pray you were numb,
The look on your face, determined not to succumb.

Crawling, bobbing, water lapping your face,
You called out to God, you felt His embrace.

The end of the war, a break in world-strife,
You gave it all, your last breath in this life.

They splash in the ocean, frolic in the sand,
By your brave sacrifice, you said that they can.
