by Don Costello 2 Samuel 21:19 And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam. a. 2 Samuel 21:19 [Amplified Bible] There was again war at Gob with the Philistines; and Elhanan son of Jaare-oregim, a Bethlehamite, slew Goliath the Gittite, whose spear shaft was like a weaver's beam. b. 2 Samuel 21:19 [NIV] In another battle with the Philistines at Gob, Elhanan son of Jaare-Oregim the Bethlehamite killed Goliath the Gittite, who had a spear with a shaft like a weaver's rod. c. 2 Samuel 21:19 [NASV] And there was war with the Philistines again at Gob, and Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim the Bethlehamite killed Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver's beam. 1). The reason the KJV is different from the other three translations is because the words "the brother of" are not in the Hebrew text. The King James translators inserted the words "the brother of" in italics. They did so because the context required it, which is easy to see by comparing the parallel passage in 1 Chronicles 20:5. 2). 1 Chronicles 20:5 And there was war again with the Philistines; and Elhanan the son of Jair slew Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, whose spear staff was like a weaver's beam.
