The Beatiful Princess
by Louisa Hall The Beautiful Princess There was once a beautiful princess Who lived in her father's castle One day in her wanderings She discovered a most delightful sight Here was a hidden room in a tower high With pretty furnishings And an antique mirror Lovely and wide. She closed the door And forgot her former life And with all this, Her heart remained quite light. For each day when she awoke She'd parade in her dresses Then sit at the mirror And comb out her tresses. All day she would sit In perfect delight In front of her mirror And gaze at the sight. Or perhaps, even from the window watch The interesting sights below. There were dancing elves And animals out to play Courting men and blushing ladies Sights so amiable for hours of her gazes And merrily the day would pass in dreamy hazes. As she retired in her rickety cot She'd fall asleep dreaming of her happy lot. Then one warm summer's morning It dawned on her to ask, She curiously wanted to know: "Mirror," she asked, with much uncertainty "do you think I'm beautiful?" So pondering these thoughts, she started to look And the more that she looked She more she could see And the more that she realized She couldn't POSSIBLY be- Beautiful. Her nose was too big Her ears were too small She had pimples! She had freckles! It was no use at all! And with each day that she spent In relentless resent Of each wrong feature That the mirror would present. Her tower room grew darker Colder Smaller. And prison bars appeared! And locks on her doorway. And deeply seeped her bitterness As daily grew her fear. Desperate for rescue, she cried out below "Help me, I'm trapped, I'm lost, I'm alone." An elf, hearing her cry Came to her aid "Hush your cries" Her words, soothing and warm Reassured the princess As the elf gently pried "What's the matter, dear one?" "Am I beautiful?" the princess asked in reply The elf said laughing "of course you are." Deeply relieved, she let out a sigh And turned to wave her hero goodbye. But as the elf was leaving The princess let out a cry "Your ears, your ears! How perfect they are!" She ran to the mirror And confirmed her deep fears Her ears, so small, ugly and dainty Poisoned her otherwise pretty expression What would the elf With her perfect elfish ears Know of being ugly? Her word could not be trusted. The elf, quite alarmed Came with more help. Each day came another person to tell The princess of her captivating beauty But also in they, she found only a mirror Of all her physical failings And resulting displeasure. In bitterness she hid In her cold, dark, prison cell And contemplated how loathsome to all she must be. Until one day, a prince had heard of her plight And had come to her rescue. He was after all, also a knight. He climbed up a ladder and yelled from the window "Haven't you heard princess?" He yelled the good news "That beauty comes from the inside" Really? she thought, taken a back Could this possibly be true? "Come back tomorrow" she called back softly Her voice shaking slightly with hope. She thought to herself, pondering to the mirror If beauty comes from the inside Do you think I'm beautiful? So she started to look But the more that she looked She more she could see And the more that she realized She couldn't POSSIBLY be- Beautiful Her heart had grown Bitter, proud and full of fear Insecurity marked her and she knew that All the could do For the rest of her days Cry alone, trapped, lost and afraid Tears streaming down and down her ugly face. The prince arrived, early next day To hear her sobbing and crying She dared only but glance at his face. "Shh princess"he started to say When wickedly she burst "You're too ugly for me, I need someone More beautiful than me, but if am ugly, Then who should that be?" Wisely he knew just what to say. "Where is your father?" -"Huh? I don't know." "Have you seen him, have you asked him? What does your father say?" "You know my father?" She asked, tentatively "Yes and I know, that he said HE has the key, He is coming to set you free." "Oh my fatherI forgot about him. He loves me, he accepts me, I'm pretty to him. I guess I could possiblywait for him. But Oh, I'm afraid, what if my father hates me this way." With the hope the prince had brought The window bars caved And he asked the beautiful princess If he could comfort her and stay Until her father to her rescue came. Yes she nodded Drying her damp eyes She graced the prince with a beautiful smile. Together they broke through the prison night. In the next second, the father smashed down the door. He had come as fast as he could race And grasped her in his arms Lifting her so high He reveled in delight. "You are so lovely, admirable beautiful, sweet, gentle, perfect pretty, fine, wonderful, dazzling, captivating delightful, powerful" His praise went on and on She wondered how she could ever think of herself so wrong "I have so much to tell you Of the love I feel for you, my child. Let your security reside In the love you see in my eyes I long to hold you As I did when you were young You are my precious treasure. Believe me, believe this: My love for you is real." With these words he took the mirror And smashed the lying glass. And cast the pieces To the other side of the world. He addressed the prince "Worthy man, I give my daughter to you love her as I do. Daughter, you are beautiful Son, a worthy King. Reign in my stead and do me proud And I will be back soon. I am a bible college student in Brisbane Australia.
