After The Funeral (my mother-in-law's)
by Genuine Suede

Mom
lies buried now,
beneath that clay and gravel muck
that fills the hole
and sinks, even yet.
I can see her still,
alone,
entombed within white satin folds,
face composed,
hands carefully placed upon her chest.
Six feet down...
and eternity between us.

Like a candle snuffed out by a
summer breeze,
life ends.
And then--nothing!
Only memories remain.
And one day,
even these will fade away.

With funeral done, the kin go home,
the phone calls stop,
and emptiness
pervades each vacant spot unfilled...

And Life moves on.

What I expected, I don't know,
but something--MORE THAN THIS!
I do not question after-life, but 'Here!'
While on this earth I am dismayed
to find
that 'This'
is all there is!
