Sweepstakes and Prizes
by Irvin Rozier

Philippians 3 verse 14 "I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus".

We all would like to win a prize I suppose
I was blessed to be one of those
Whose number was declared a winner
When I won a free birthday dinner

I have never won a gigantic sweepstakes
But I once won of them good old church cakes
Cars, trucks, and televisions I have not won
Them prizes go to someone named Sue or Don

I once won $27 at a high school basketball game
I felt so proud when they called out my name
I am a winner of a prize I thought to myself
As I bought some Keebler cookies, the one with an elf

My entries to Publisher's Clearing House have been in vain
For 30 years nary a penny, nickel or a dollar did I gain
Over the years Reader's Digest sent me hundreds of offers
I could enter their sweepstakes, order and fill their coffers

I have sent in entries to win a Super Bowl trip
I found one entry on a can of jalepeno cheese dip
I knew that I could kick a 30 yard field goal with ease
And win that million dollars pretty as you please

My entries went to that vast supply with no chance
Well they missed out on that little jig I planned to dance
I almost gave up but decided to enter one more time
I spent 39 cents on a stamp, they used to be a dime

I may never win a grand prize, or fortune or fame
But I won the greatest prize of all when I called on His name
Jesus has said that there are riches waiting for me
More than my ears can hear of or that my eyes can see

So I will continue to run this spiritual race
I may be slow but I know that He sets the pace
And when the race is run and my final breath is drawn
I will receive the grandest prize that has ever been known
