LOOK UPON A MAN poem
by Richard L. Provencher

Once he held court among
the wildness, young legs able
to dash headstrong through thickets

nothing fazed him; not ravines
filled with hubris, nor ridges
rough on feet seeking purchase

held down for a while when
bad health threatened; survived.

Now he shuffles from closet to kitchen
to washroom and back again. His
eyes still sparkle, smells the
wind above the trees and senses

the rise of trout as they peer
above stream's surface. But the
man not only remembers, he is
at peace. Content to sit

gazing out the window, happy
to read his Bible though he struggles
the Word his cane of satisfaction.
