Waterproof Zoo
by Jan Ackerson

Old Noah had just put his three sons to bed
And stepped out of his house, when the voice of God said,
"Hello friend. I'm pleased that you're such a good man,
But the earth is corrupt now, so here is my plan.

I want you to fashion a gigantic boat
All covered with pitch, so it won't fail to float.
Your family will live there, protected from flood
And when it's all over, you'll land in the mud."

Sing wallaby, gecko, gazelle, chimpanzee,
Tarantula, platypus, loon, manatee,
Sing eft, armadillo, giraffe, caribou,
Porcupine, whippoorwill, cockerel, shrew.

Poor Noah was startled, but quickly obeyed.
He constructed an ark, out of gopher-wood made.
"I'm finished!" he stated. "Now what should I do?"
And God said, "You've built me a waterproof zoo."

"I'm sending the animals, only in pairs.
(You'll want to keep separate the mice and the bears.)
Take plenty of food, and your good wife and sons
So you will be safe when the flood has begun."

Porcupine, whippoorwill, cockerel, shrew.

So crawling and flying and leaping they came--
Two beasts at a time, making Noah exclaim,
"Make sure to save room for Shem, Japheth, and Ham!
They can stay on Deck B, near the ewe and the ram!"

And with the last animal safely on board
The doorway was sealed by the hand of the Lord,
And softly at first, the rain came pitter-pat,
Then fell to the ground with a great sploosh! and splat!

The floating menagerie filled up with sound,
So noisy that old Noah's eardrums would pound.
A whinny, a whistle, oink, woof, caw, and coo,
A snuffle, a growl, quack gobble, and moo.

It never was quiet, and that's not the worst--
The smells were so ripe, Noah thought he would burst.
One job on the boat made poor Noah's wife bitter,
For she had to empty the used tiger litter.

The water kept falling for forty long days,
But Noah insisted that God should be praised.
Then finally, one day, they all heard the rain stop
And the ark came to rest on a tall mountaintop.

They all left the ark, with the sky warm and sunny--
Two of each creature, and eighty-five bunnies.
Then with the release of a single white dove,
Our God sent the rainbow, a sign of His love.
