DOROTHY
I don't like this forest! It's -- it's dark and creepy!

SCARECROW
Of course, I don't know, but I think it'll get darker before it gets lighter.

DOROTHY
Do -- do you suppose we'll meet any wild animals?

TIN MAN
We might.

DOROTHY
Oh --

SCARECROW
Animals that -- that eat straw?

TIN MAN
Some -- but mostly lions, and tigers, and bears.

DOROTHY
(reacts) Lions?

SCARECROW
And tigers? (looking around)

TIN MAN
(looking around) And bears.

DOROTHY
(frightened) Oh! Lions and tigers and bears!

LION
(Offstage) Grrr!

DOROTHY
(reacts) Oh, my!

TIN MAN, SCARECROW AND DOROTHY
Lions and tigers and bears!

DOROTHY
Oh, my!

TIN MAN, SCARECROW AND DOROTHY
Lions and tigers and bears!

DOROTHY
Oh, my!

TIN MAN -- SCARECROW AND DOROTHY
Lions and tigers and bears!

DOROTHY
Oh, my!

TIN MAN -- SCARECROW AND DOROTHY
Lions and tigers and bears!

DOROTHY
Oh, my! (screams)

LION
(suddenly jumps out from behind some bushes on stage) Grrr!

-----------------------------------------------------------
Tin Man and Scarecrow fall down
-----------------------------------------------------------

DOROTHY
What sort of an animal is that?

DAVID THE DIRECTOR
CUT! Cut! What kind of acting is that? You people don't look scared at all--
Here. (grabs a folding chair and slams it on the stage) Theresee that? See that?
That's what I'm talkin' about. You need to look so scared like you've seen--

-----------------------------------------------------------
Lion begins to cry. Tin Man and Scarecrow stand up,
and straighten out their costumes.
-----------------------------------------------------------

DOROTHY
(walks over and puts her arm around Lion). Now look what you've gone and done, David. He's cryin'.

SCARECROW
Yeah, you've scared him to tears.

TIN MAN
Come on David, did you forget he has a heart condition?

DAVID THE DIRECTOR
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, okay I get the point. But I think you got my point, too?

DOROTHY
Yeah, that you're mean and creepy.

SCARECROW
Like this forest!

DAVID THE DIRECTOR
(walks up on stage) Okay, okay! How can I explain this? (rubs his chin for a few seconds) OkayI've got it. (steps over to Lion and places one hand on Lion's shoulder) First of all, Lion, please forgive me for frightening you.

LION
It'sit's okay, I forgive you. I've just been so jumpy lately.

DAVID THE DIRECTOR
And that's the key, my friends.

DOROTHY
What's the key?

SCARECROW
What do you mean?

TIN MAN
Will it help us?

DAVID THE DIRECTOR
Help you? Yes it will absolutely help you. Think of it this way: What is the opposite of fear? Does anyone know?

DOROTHY
The opposite of fear is faith.

TIN MAN
Faith born out of love.

SCARECROW
Aware, not scared.

DAVID THE DIRECTOR
That's right! If we are aware of God's presence in our lives, we'll be at peace in every situation, even while walking through the Dark and Eerie Forest. David wrote,
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

DOROTHY
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

LION
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. Wow! I haven't thought about that scripture in years.

DAVID THE DIRECTOR
Praise God, you're all seeing the goodness and mercy of God in your lives. It's not always easy, but remember Jesus is living right there inside you. (points at Tin Man's heart)

TIN MAN
(smiles big) Right in our hearts!

DOROTHY
Oh my, this is wonderful.

SCARECROW
Because Jesus is Wonderful!

DAVID THE DIRECTOR
Keep in mind God's 'big picture'. Oftentimes the things we are worried or scared about are really NOT what they seemlike the Cowardly Lion. He's really just a big chicken in a lion's body. Always remember: Jesus loves you.

DOROTHY
And Jesus loves you (points at each one) and you -- and you -- and you -- and even all of you (motions to the audience).

DAVID THE DIRECTOR
Okaythat's enough for one practice. (yawns) There's no place like home.
DOROTHY
Grrr--that's my line!

LION
Grrr!

DOROTHY
You're silly.
