The Woman At The Well
by Nellie Shani I was the woman at the well My story you all know quite well While young and full of beauty Attracted men like a duty They did not stay with me So I let them be One day here the next day gone All leaving me quite forlorn All five of them Like a flower without a stem Withered away At the break of a new day Then I had a new love Like one cast down from above It was to treat him swell I went down to the well I lowered my pot to draw water But should have known better For a Jewish man stood there Without a pot his hand was bare He offered me water fresh and pure How he would draw it I was not sure Sir how will you draw it I asked As upon his offer much doubt I cast I have living water To all who thirst I now offer To drink this water is much gain For you will never thirst again Go bring your husband unto me If I was truthful he wanted to see I said a husband I have none With the present man just having fun You have spoken truth to me he said You have really nothing more to dread For five husbands you have had And with the sixth man you're still sad My spirit stirred within me For now I could clearly see This man was the awaited Messiah The One we all desire Back to the village I went Like one that was sent Come see the man I call From him I could not hide my all They followed back to the well Like a people wooed by a bell This Man is the awaited Messiah The One we all desire Nellie Odhuno Shani is a Counselor, Conference speaker and writer.
