They Counted out the nails that day
by veronica cressey

Look what they did to you,
a guy they hardly knew.
Out of their fear and spite,
they dimmed their own sunlight.

So many years ago,
now everybody knows
your name, the shining knight,
who introduced the light.

Such things you had to say
as sorrow swept your way.
Ignorance itself was ripe,
yet you failed to put up a fight.

One, two, three,
as they came after me,
the counted out the nails that day,
as they hammered their hatred home,
hammered their hatred home.
Two, three, four,
as my blood hit the floor,
they shook their heads as if to say;
We have hammered our hatred home,
hammered our hatred home.

Your mother wept the day
they took her son away
and as her heart was breaking,
she felt herself awaken.

Later on, you came to see
your friends in your body.
Resurrected, a delight,
even Thomas got a fright.

You were the medium
as only you could be.
Took the role of fathers' son,
in a way you set us free.

Now we remember you,
a guy we hardly knew,
and now through love and light,
you're never out of sight!

One, two three,
as they came after me,
they counted out the nails that day,
as they hammered their hatred home,
hammered their hatred home.
Two, three, four,
as my blood hit the floor,
they shook their heads and walked away,
they had hammered their hatred home,
hammered their hatred home.
