What's Your Name?
by PamFord Davis We place little significance in the given name of an individual other than believing it sounds nice, or is a name handed down through their family. In Bible times, the name often revealed the character, authority, or role of individuals. Scripture reveals God through many different names, each a shadow of the sovereign God of all creation. A diligent study gives us greater appreciation and awe for who he is! His word clearly displays his identity. Jacob returned to his homeland with trepidation, uncertain of welcome by his brother Esau. Along route, he took an unexpected detour, wrestling with more than his conscience. He struggled with his opponent. "The man asked him, 'What is your name?' 'Jacob he answered. Then the man said, 'Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome.' Jacob said, 'Please tell me your name.' But he replied, 'Why do you ask my name?' Then he blessed him there. So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, 'It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared (Genesis 32:27-30 NIV)."
