WHAT MEANS FOR ME "AMERICAN IDOL"?
by John Urs

Every Wednesday and every Thursday night millions of people are neglecting all the other chores and stay in front of TV to see "American idol". They really enjoy the foolishness of some contestants, the rudeness of the judges and maybe the quality of the music.

There is no person on this earth not dreaming to be somebody, someday. Even the first couple that lived on this planet wanted to be "like God" and this is why we live what we live today.

One of the Old Testament most important commandments said not to have and worship other gods except the true living God Yahweh. In another place it says not to speak other god's names. Idolatry is one of the major sins of Israel and it was always punished.

Today not only we are saying other god's names. But we became so used with the terminology so that is not bothering our conscience anymore. I hear about this on the Christian radio stations, on the Christian websites (Michael W. Smith has a full page on his website to support one of the contestants).

Is this wrong? In my personal opinion it is. Why ?

First, for accepting pagan language and to get used with it. This show became part of our life. We laugh at bad attitudes, bad words we hear and we find them an excuse: "Oh, it's just Simon" We are having so much fun together with the whole family listening to this kind of words, instead of building a family altar reading the Word of God and praying. We are neglecting God and we are worshiping our idols. The name of this show is totally anti God and anti Christianity.

Second, for loving what the world loves. We are warned in the Scriptures not to love the world. Not only we are loving the world this days, but we started to make the church to love the world in an inappropriate way, in a way that was never commanded by our Lord Jesus Christ. We have "Christian artists" participating to this contest and showing others that is nothing wrong to sing nonchristian music and to want to become a superstar.

Yes, it is. We are called to be servants of Christ and servants of others. Jesus called us to follow Him and submit all our dreams and wishes to Him and filter them through His Word. I believe that we are not reading the Bible enough and we don't care what the Bible says, especially when we like something.

This is just a warning for you and for me of how easy is to forget the Word of God, how easy is to neglect it and how easy is to cross on the other side without even noticing.

Be a bondservant of Christ, not an "American idol" Jesus is our LORD and to Him we give all the praise and all our worship.
