Living With God, Playing With Angels
by Bob Valleau After reading a story about a six-year-old boy with an incurable intestinal disease, I felt sad. How cruel can life be when an innocent child is afflicted with something so unfair? What kind of world do we live in where pain and suffering seems to be the order of the day? Aside from a miracle, this child's time on earth is nearing its end. The parents shared how inadequate they felt to make their son better. They had spent many nights crying and wrestling with the reason to the question all of us ask when tragedy strikes, "Why?" I related to the parents, too, and wondered why. I concluded that in our broken-down, sin-sick world, death is the inevitable result of all things living. At some point, each of us will come face-to-face with our own immortality. Some may die suddenly while others may take awhile to say their goodbyes. In any event, we are at the mercy of God's timetable. For Christians, however, death is not the end. We are promised eternal life (John 3:36) and a special place where Jesus has gone on and prepared for us (John 14:2). Thank God our home is not of this world. Even though what I read saddened me, I was amazed and encouraged by how the boy responded to the devastating news about his prognosis. May his touching words to his parents be as equally inspiring to you: "Just think. I'll be living with God and playing with the angels."
