Understanding The Bridge Between Knowledge And Wisdom
by Dale Linton The Relationship Between Knowledge and Wisdom. Ecclesiastes 7:12 For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it. This verse suggests that Knowledge is in an extremely close working relationship with Wisdom. The wording of the sentence seems to shift focus from " the excellency of knowledge" to "wisdom", as if some connective wording between knowledge and wisdom is missing. Without question this verse is making light of this truth; knowledge plays a vital part of wisdom's life giving character. Proverbs 24:14 So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul: when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off. This verse supports the close working relationship of knowledge and wisdom that appeared in the sentence structure of Ecc 7:12. Now, knowledge is given to be a part of wisdom, promising that when an individual discoveres they're working order, there is a reward. Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. These two verses continue to communicate the same close relationship that knowledge and wisdom have. By the fear of the Lord, knowledge and wisdom find their beginning. The fact that the fear of the Lord establishes a beginning of both words suggests a potential cycle or process. In other words, they depend on each other to perpetually operate. The character of Godly knowledge promotes wisdom and the character of Godly wisdom promotes knowledge. So within this cycle of knowledge to wisdom ones end is the others beginning and vice versa. For instance: Proverbs 18:15 The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge. Knowledge promotes a wise ear, that ear desires more knowledge increasing the promotion cycle. Proverbs 15:7 The lips of the wise disperse knowledge: but the heart of the foolish doeth not so. A wise person speaks knowledge that the heart of an unwise individual cannot recognize, but the ear of another wise individual can. This wise heart or ear recognizes "the knowledge of wisdom", Proverbs 24:14. Proverbs 24:5 A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth strength. Those who are wise have strength in character and because wisdom seeks knowledge, knowledge increases they're strength. Think of it this way: the electrical components, or ignition of a car is knowledge and the exhaust system of the car is wisdom. A running engine is the beginning of ignition and the beginning of the exhaust. When the key is turned the ignition and exhaust both begin simultaneously. Put a bannana in the tail pipe and the best ignition won't start the car. But if the battery is dead there will be no help from a good exhaust system. The Missing Link There is a missing word in this operation, or cycle that has been discussed. This word enters in with as close of a relationship as knowledge and wisdom share. This word represents the motivating element within us causing knowledge and wisdom to join hands. Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. Knowledge of the holy is "understanding". The knowledge in this discussion has a character that earns the name understanding. It is aligned with hearing and has an emotional element in its description. Through understanding there is a motivation or desire to act wisely. Recognizing the author of our desire causes us to seek more of the knowledge that began the process, Proverbs 18:15. Proverbs 1:5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels: Proverbs 2:2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Proverbs 3:13 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. Finally, there has been a riddle in the title of this article: Understanding The Bridge Between Knowledge And Wisdom. Without adding a word to this title, there's a way to create what the title suggest the article is going to explain.
