In My Room
by PamFord Davis

The noise and rush around us is a hindrance to prayer. My husband, infant daughter and myself, lived in the north side of Chicago in 1968. The windy city is never still; we heard the sounds of traffic and people in the streets at all hours of day and night. I found it difficult to block out the distractions for quiet times with God.

Jesus gave instructions on private prayer. "And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly (Matthew 6:5-6 NKJ)." The Father reserves rooms for prayer; maybe I need to post a sign warning mental distractions Do not disturb!
