Remember Jordan
by Verna Cole Mitchell Imagine the Israelites as they gather around Joshua for the orders about the wall of Jericho. Some must have scoffed, "The fortified wall wouldn't tumble just because we march around it with priests blowing trumpets and carrying the ark of the covenant." But Joshua knew his instructions were from the Lord Who had promised to be with him as He had been with Moses. God had already told Joshua, "I have delivered Jericho into your hand." Joshua remembered that he had just met with the commander of the Lord's army. (Joshua 6:2. NIV) Perhaps Joshua had just two words for the doubters: remember Jordan. Here Almighty God had provided for them beyond what anyone had thought possible. Rolling up the waters of the magnificent Jordan River in flood season, God had made a way for His people to walk through the river on dry land. They commemorated this miracle from God on their behalf by setting up rocks at Gilgal to represent each tribe. This was a reminder to never forget the hand of the Lord is mighty. Joshua may even have brought these rocks to their remembrance. The same God whose power had brought them across the Jordan in a path that He had provided would bring the wall of Jericho tumbling as they acted in obedience to Him. Do you think the armed men might have kept a march step with the words "Jordan, Jordan, Jordan," echoing in their minds? Then God did for them the impossible. They marched around the wall once each day for six days; then on the seventh day they marched around seven times, and when at Joshua's command they shouted, the wall collapsed. I like to suppose they shouted as they entered the city, "Praise God, praise God, praise God!" What do you do when you have a task to do for the Lord that you feel is greater than your abilities? We serve the God of all creation, the God of the Israelites, the omnipotent God who is able to do miracles far beyond what we can comprehend. Because of His great love for us He sent His only Son into the world to die for our sins and to rise again to sit in His place by the Father and to make intercession for us. His strength is made perfect in our weakness. Our challenge in every situation is to remember Jesus. Praise God, praise God, praise God!
