Treasure
by Verna Cole Mitchell

What a marvelous picture that word conjures in the mind, from heaps of gold coins on a pirate ship to glittering gems under glass in a museum. Of course, treasure might also be a love letter yellowed with age or a framed picture of a beloved family member, maybe even a hard earned college diploma or a medal for meritorious service. For whatever pictures come into the mind at the word, treasure is surely something of highest personal value.

When Grandson Nolan was quite young, he climbed into the family car one day to go to preschool. He closed the car door after he got in and then could not figure out how to open it, at which point he became terrified and began sobbing. His mother, Debra, following him to the car, saw him crying inside. She opened the door, and took Nolan into her arms. She said, "Nolan, don't you know you are all right? I won't let anything happen to you. You are my treasure."

At that Nolan sobbed even harder. He looked up at her and said, "I don't want to be buried." Though Debra explained the meaning of treasure to him, I suspect he still thought that all treasure is buried treasure, just like it was in the stories he had heard.

We read in Matthew 6:21 where Jesus said this about treasure. "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." It is my prayer each day that my heart will seek and cherish only those treasures which bring honor to God's name.
