"A Gushing Riverbank"
by Mai-Anh Le

This is my reflection on Matthew 13:45 - "The Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls,".

There is a deep gulf, a frightful void which separates the holy abyss of God from the vulnerable abyss of humanity. It is from this abyss of divine mercy that the love of God flows in wave after wave rushing towards our human abyss of misery, filling us with an extraordinary love that mankind has never known. This everlasting love cannot come from anyone or anywhere else but from the heart of God Himself. It is only given to the humble hearts of man, for mankind alone cannot create this kind love. However, once we do receive it we are able to pass it on sharing it with our fellow neighbors. Without God's love quenching our body and souls, our thirsty hearts dry up like a scorched desert that is dry and lifeless. In our vulnerable state is when evil begins its slithering crawl out from its frightful gulf and lurks around what is suppose to be the human tabernacle for God to dwell in; this is our heart. Wanting to invade, evil's goal is to take over our soul flooding it with darkness and misery. It is with such a heart that humanity's sinful, cruel, and ugly acts are carried out. Only God can wipe out such infestation from our being but this act requires our want and our desire to live as God's children doing His will which is to love the world as God has loved us and to love Him by being His shepherd going out in the world to welcome people into His flock.

I hold in my soul a kind of everlasting love. Rendered by the Father, it flows like a tranquil river through my being. It fills my heart with life, over flooding it with a love that is beyond measurable. God has made of my soul a profound reservoir of love into which He is always pouring more. Gushing in waves it wants to find a reservoir to spill into. The waves themselves burn like fire inside my soul yet still it somehow seems to refresh my spirit like limpid water. It nourishes me and gives me life; it humbles and heals my physical body. Because of it I feel in myself a passionate desire to make God loved, for this love is not mine nor is it just for me but for all the children of His world. This is what He would want me to do because He desires for me to live my life imitating His Son Jesus Christ.

My heart is only a place of passage for this divine love, as it is yours too, my fellow Christians. Our living heart, God's living tabernacle, is only an earthly station where it stops when passing. But no, it does not stop there for it is ever passing. Wave after wave it pushes on, but where does this Infinite love want to go? It desires to touch the hearts of the lonely and the oppressed, not oppressed from government ternary or unjust human slavery but from the misery of sin. This misery is by far much worse than that which is afflicted by man, for it can follow us into the afterlife and condemn us to hell's misery. Therefore, it is our duty as recipients of God's love, as faithful Christians to pass on this love to our neighbors so that they too may come to know God and thus be saved from misery. But as I've mentioned before, there is a deep and wide gulf of darkness between the abyss of the Divine and the abyss of humanity. It is the nothingness of evil. Hence, the only way around this dark void is to travel over a bridge which God has thrown to connect us to the Father; it is the living Christ and Savior. Thus, it is by Christ that love reaches the world. By Christ, yes, but especially by His heart.

Therefore, I urge you now, those of you who also feel this gushing river which nourishes your soul. Go out and evangelize through acts of discipleship by giving God's love to one another. For God first loved you and I and so He desires for us to love Him back by loving one another. Thus, the greatest Commandment is fulfilled.
