Jesus, My Captain A Fun Bible Object Lesson for Your Kids
by Kathy Vincent

I've never been on a cruise ship, but if I ever did go, I would want Jesus to be my Captain. No matter the water or weather, I would know that I would be safe. Romans 8:28 says this: We know that in everything God works for the good of those who love Him." Life can bring along stormy weather, but if Jesus is the Captain over our lives, we can trust that He will work for the good in our lives in absolutely every circumstance. Here is a fun Bible object lesson to help your kids learn this truth.

Here's what you do:
The object you will use for this lesson will be a recording of a movie of a boat being tossed about in bad weather. The following link will take you to a nice, short video that your class will enjoy: http://www.break.com/index/insane-boat-docking-1952110

Ask the following questions to help stimulate discussion:

1. I am going to play a movie of a boat being tossed about by stormy waves. What are your thoughts about this video? Would you want to be in this boat? Why or why not? (Wait for responses.)
2. Life can often be like this boat out in the midst of rocky water. The captain of the boat seemed to know what he was doing and was able to dock the boat safely. When God is the Captain of our ship, we can trust that He will always bring us safely home and will even take the difficult situations in our life and work them out for good.
3. Ask a child to read Romans 8:28.
4. Let's learn a little more about this Scripture and learn how to apply it to our own lives. Here are 3 important points.

Point 1: Pretend that your life is like a boat out in the ocean. Sometimes the water is calm and sometimes it gets kind of wild and washes up over the side and gets you wet. It can be scary and unsettling to be in a situation like that.

Point 2: Now picture the Captain of your boat is Jesus. You should have all the peace in the world knowing that Jesus is steering your ship, because no matter what the water or weather is like you will be safe and you will see Him work good things in your life.

Point 3: Knowing that Jesus controls your life should be extremely comforting. He is all wise and knows everything you need. Even through very difficult times you can trust that God will bring good things to you. Jesus has never given anything bad to any of His children. He only gives good things.

This 3-Point Bible Object Lesson for Kids was inspired by my reading of C.H. Spurgeon's devotional on Romans 8:28 from his book Morning and Evening. You too can be inspired by your favorite Christian authors and come up with your own 3-Point Sermon for Kids.
