He Carries Me
by PamFord Davis Caretakers transport dependent infants in strollers, carriages or in the security of their own arms. The child has no choice; they go where others take them. At times, they are not only willing, but also delighted. They enjoy the chance to see the world around them, feel the fresh air and the rocking or swaying of their body while traveling around the block, across town or country. Babies feel the security and warmth of a loving parent carrying them. Adults notice a change of attitude when children become toddlers. As soon as they are sure on their feet, they frequently resist the restrictions of car seats or parents carrying them. They squirm, whine and try to free themselves. To outsiders it might appear a child is injured or mistreated; in reality, they are just acting out and trying to get their own way. There comes another stage in development; parents trust a young child to walk along side. It does take patience; little legs cannot move very fast. A wise adult knows it is worth the extra time. The child gains confidence when given the opportunity to stretch their legs and accompany mommy and daddy. They also learn that life has dangers such as approaching traffic; they must stay very close to guardians and follow all instructions. Sometimes a parent carries their child for a different reason. They have given a warning or corrected their child; the child ignores or defiantly refuses to mind. The parent then reaches down, picks up the child and carries them back home. As God's child, I think about the times he carries me. I believe there have been times when I rested in his arms, content and joyful. He did not have to explain our destination. I was just happy to be with him. I could rest or enjoy the sights of expanded horizons. I confess that on other occasions I restricted the restraints and disciplines of life, tried to do things my way, unaware of the consequences. The Lord has reached down and firmly lifted me out of danger. I am encouraged with the assurance that God is in control. He carried Israel and He carries me. "He took them in his arms and carried them all those years (Isaiah 63:9b CEV)."
