Do "Knot" Add A Fun Bible School Activity for Your Kids To Learn Deuteronomy 4:2
by Kathy Vincent

Isn't it truly amazing that people have actually given their lives for the Word of God? God's Word has meant so much to some people that they were willing to die for it rather than see it compromised. This is a truth that should compel us all to hold the Bible in the highest esteem. However, we all know that there are also people who have abused God's Word by adding or taking away from it. Deuteronomy 4:2 says this: "Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the LORD your God that I give you." God takes His Word seriously and so should your children. Here is a fun Bible school activity to help them learn this wonderful verse. It's called "Do Knot Add".

Here's what you do:
For this activity, you will need to prepare 2 sets of index cards that contain one phrase each from Deuteronomy 4:2 as found below. This means you will have a total of 10 cards, one which will include the full reference, for each team. Jumble each set of cards separately and then place each in their own bucket.
1. Do not add
2. to what I command you
3. and do not
4. subtract from it
5. but keep
6. the commands
7. of the Lord
8. your God
9. that I give you
10. Deuteronomy 4:2

Now, divide your class into 2 teams and give the captain of each team a 12-inch length of clothesline rope. At the signal to begin, the captain ties a double knot in the rope and then passes it to the next person on his team. This person now unties the knot in the rope and then passes it to the next person after him who will tie a knot in the rope, and so on down the line of his teammates. However, after each person has their turn at tying or untying the rope, they need to run to the bucket and pull out one of the cards and display it in an area on a table or on the floor. He will then go back to his team taking the same place in the line as before. The first team to display their Bible verse in correct order is the winner.

Before playing, introduce the lesson in the following way:
(You will need an additional 12-inch piece of rope.)
I have in my hand a piece of rope. Just for a few moments, I would like this piece of rope to remind you of the Word of God or the Bible. The Word of God is absolutely perfect. There is not one mistake in it. Because of this, everyone should hold the Bible with the greatest of respect. Unfortunately, however, there are many people who do not esteem the Bible. In fact, some people try to add to the Bible. (Tie a know in the center of the rope.) Some people try to subtract from God's Word. (Take some scissors and make 2 cuts, one on each side of the know.) When additions and subtractions happen to the Bible, you no longer have the true and real Word of God. (Hold up the 2 pieces of rope.) You are only left with pieces of it, which can lead many people astray from the truth. Deuteronomy 4:2 says this: "Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the LORD your God that I give you." Let's play a game called "Do Knot Add" to help us learn the importance of this Scripture.

At this point, you are ready to play the Bible school activity based on Deuteronomy 4:2. Have fun!
