"New" is never "Old" Until the "New" Comes

"We're sorry, Dudley," my mother said with a hug. "The man at dad's work has already sold the bike so you won't be able to get it this Christmas." I was devastated. The one thing desired more than anything else in the life of a 12-year boy of the mid 1970s was a Chopper bicycle. I already owned a bike but it was well worn and falling apart. A high-rise-handle bike was the thing to have - and the Chopper bike was "it". My parents promised to do the best they could but, as they walked away, I closed my bedroom door deeply disappointed and heartbroken.

Life's full of disappointments. How many times do we set our hearts on something new in life just to find that it slithers between our fingers like warm oil? At the start of a new year we all have high hopes and aspirations for the "new" and the "better". We set our sights on lofty targets every New Year in the hope to simplify life or find that ideal job or get out of debt only to discover 12 months later that nothing's changed. Could it be that we impatiently pre-empt the plans of God?

One thing that I have discovered about God-tracking is that God's purposes for me are always new. In fact, I have discovered that "new" is well always "new". For instance, the New Year only becomes the Old Year when becomes the New Year again! We're always living in the New Year right up to midnight on New Year's Eve. The scriptures tell us that in Christ we are new creations; we are called to sing a new song to the Lord; in Christ we enjoy a New Covenant and we are like new wine in new wineskins. Walking with God through Christ you will discover that what God promises he always fulfils. In Christ all of the promises of God are "yes". However, the key to experiencing the "new" is to wait patiently for the promises of God, like waiting for midnight to come on New Year's Eve. You see, the "new" is never "old" until the "new" comes.

Christmas morning finally arrived. I woke up early as a boy of 12 does, but this Christmas I felt different. I made my way to the Christmas tree with a little less sprite in my step than usual. Here I found my parents waiting for me, sipping steaming coffee. My father handed out some smaller gifts, which I opened with appreciation and joy, but somehow the disappointment in not receiving my new bike was clearly evident. Finally, when all the gifts were eventually opened my mother turned to me and said, "Dud, look behind you." Up to this point I had been captivated with the few brightly wrapped boxes under the tree. I turned and looked deep into the still gloomy lounge. There it was - a sparkling green high-rise Chopper bike.

God-tracking is always waiting patiently for God's new purposes.
