Escape from Pornography
by Michael Okyere Asante

He waits for everyone to be out of sight
and types into the menu bar his favourite site.
He sees the nudity of men and women, young and old.
He cannot sleep until he has experienced pleasure
that is no pleasure at all; for deceiving himself,
he deprives himself of a hopeful and bright marriage life;
for daily practice gets him addicted,
to the pleasures of the flesh and of the world
and urges him to find new material
every moment to satisfy his boredom.

He wants to overcome it, but power and will fade him.
Two weeks without it thinking he's got him defeated,
but returns to it in three weeks more addicted.
He cries, he prays, he tries, he wails, but fails.
"Confide in someone, seek help", himself he advises
But no, pride won't produce in him trust and faith;
for it grips him to accept with ease his self-righteousness
that provides no hope of life but damnation.
Can he defeat such addiction which now has become
a contradiction to his Christian faith?

If only he is willing to turn from his sin
and be obedient to God's call to repentance.
If only he will forgive himself, accept God's forgiveness,
refill his heart with righteous living and God's word.
If only he will share with someone his struggles
so that he will be held accountable and be supported in prayer.
If only he will avoid the tempting situations
and keep his eyes fixed on Jesus Christ our Lord.
Then he will have the power and strength to overcome
and God will give him rest and keep him in perfect peace.
