Running On Empty
by Deborah Ann Belka

There are times when I feel I have not a drop of energy left in me. Not an ounce of gas left in me to make the long trip into another day. I feel as if the tank holding my get-up-and-go has gone-off-and-left, and I am running on empty!

On days like this, I find that I need to go to the streams of Living Water to refill the well of my strength and to find nourishment for my parched and thirty soul. Just as my car needs gas for me to continue with my journey, I need the renewing of the Holy Spirit and the refilling of His mighty power to continue my walk with the Lord.

I can honestly say I have never let my car run out of gas. I have always had the fear of being stranded in the middle of no where on some deserted road. So, I make it a habit to check my gas gage before I start my engine. When the indicator is on full, I confidently turn the key and happily drive off to my destination. When the gage is half-full, I become a little more concerned and start calculating how far I will be able to go on what gas is left. When the gage is below a quarter of a tank, I cautiously and slowly drive away praying all the way to the nearest gas station!

So. why shouldn't I have the same fear about my spiritual reservoir running out of fuel? If I were to run out of the power of the Holy Spirit I would be more than just stranded on some deserted road, I would be completely lost!

For my spiritual journey to be a victorious one, I need to make it a habit to turn to the Word each morning before I even start my engine.

Psalm 5:3 "My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord; In the morning I will direct it to You, And I will look up."

Psalm 119:157 "I rise before the dawning of the morning, and cry for help; I hope in Your Word."

Psalm 143:8 "Cause me to hear Your loving kindness in the morning, for in You do I trust; Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, For I lift up my soul to You."

I need to check the gage of my heart and see if there is any sin that needs to be confessed so that I can confidently go about my way.

Psalm 32:5 "I acknowledged my sin to You, and my iniquity I have not hidden. I said, 'I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,' and You forgave the iniquity of my sin."

Proverbs 28:13 "He who covers his sins will not prosper, But whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy."

1 John 1:9 "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

When I feel discouraged or depressed and find that my spiritual tank is half-full, I need to look into the reason for my lack of faith and pray for a renewing.

Psalm 51:10 "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me."

Isaiah 40:31 "But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint."

Romans 12:2 "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."

With my spiritual tank full, without sin, and refilled daily with the power of the Holy Spirit, I can go anywhere, anytime, without ever worrying about running out of gas and getting stranded or lost.

Romans 15:13 "Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."

Amen!
