A Sidewalk Encounter
by Richard L. Provencher

Got a light mister?
tosses
in my direction,
cig dangling from his
bruised lips

Dont smoke, my
response

Quarter for a cup
of coffee then?

Where do you get coffee
for a quarter?
I counter boldly.

He sees the hard stare
I give
me dressed in a nice hat
trousers and jacket,
cold front coming the
TV news said

wife clutching my arm
nervously,
his slept-in clothes
second hand likely.

Still standing here bud
looking at your face.

Thoughts scramble,
nerves crawl up and
down my leg

Dont give no lecture
either, green teeth
& hair awry
breathes at my face.

After long staring
we decide to step back
from the edge,
eager to be on our
separate ways.
