Light of the World
by Bobbi Richardson

Matthew 5:14-16 - "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

There is an old hymn that we used to sing in church:

The whole world was lost in the darkness of sin
The Light of the world is Jesus
Like sunshine at noonday His glory shown in
The Light of the world is Jesus

Jesus said that His followers, those who believe in and know Him, are the light of the world too.

Like the city on a hill our kind words and good deeds should stand out to everyone around us. As Jesus said, we are not to hide our goodness, we are to let it radiate to "everyone in the house".

Our thoughtfulness, our kindness, our peace and our joy ought to be so evident that those who know Him praise Him and those who don't know Him ask why we are different.

Another verse of the hymn is:

Come to the Light, 'tis shining for thee
Sweetly the Light has dawned upon me
Once I was blind but now I can see
The Light of the world is Jesus

If you know and love Him; if you were once outside of the light and now know the joy and peace of living in the light, "let your light shine". Do good wherever you are. Smile and encourage others. Let your joy in knowing and loving Jesus be seen. Let others see that no matter what the circumstances your peace with God is unshakable.

The light of the world is Jesus, but as His followers we are to carry that light. As light bearers we are to light up the darkness around us and shine so all will see and "praise your Father in heaven".

I write because I want to share what Father God has taught me and because I want others to experience His love more and more. My prayer is that my words will inspire someone to seek Him, to find Him, to know Him, to love Him.
