When disaster strikes at the heart of a community
by Laura Swindon-Ross

My grandmother was a fine woman, and she had many fine sayings. One of her sayings I remember, was the following. She used to clasp my hands and tell me -

"Man - he is made of the times that shape him;
He is made of the fires that break him;
He is made of the Faith that claims him
And brings him to the Lord."

Lord, when the times endeavour to shape us, be it through the disquietude of the earth, or the ravages of war, or the advent of disaster;
When the fires threaten to break us, be they fire of mind or depression of spirit, or affliction of the body or the soul;
Let the Faith that lives within us, ever claim us for the Lord.
May we know, that in the true pain of our distress, we need to take a moment to remember this
One true thing -
Your Love has already rescued us from the dark heart of the storm.
Help us to remember this, and stay close to you in prayer and thought, now and always. Lord, keep us by your side, until the truth of morning,

Amen.
