Leaning on the Rake
by Richard L. Provencher

Autumn leaves are curled-up
edges wrapped in calico colours
waiting for the rasp of tines
as they scrape
across lawn's waning shade of green.

Footfalls from children
tamp down remaining strains of grass
laughing and wrestling in the last
of summer innocence

adults barbecuing burgers
with friends
inclined to visit
gossiping in every direction.

He muses during a restful watch
breath coming in spasms
of sweat shifting one foot to another
dear one to soon call lunch

one more sweep should complete
morning's task
and he does with a burst
of finality.

Richard L. Provencher

Richard enjoys writing poems; many of which have been published in Print and Online. He and his wife, Esther are also co-authors of stories and a print novel. They are "born again" Christians and very busy in their church, Abundant Life Victory International, in Bible Hill, Nova Scotia.
