Leaning on the Rake
by Richard L. Provencher Autumn leaves are curled-up edges wrapped in calico colours waiting for the rasp of tines as they scrape across lawn's waning shade of green. Footfalls from children tamp down remaining strains of grass laughing and wrestling in the last of summer innocence adults barbecuing burgers with friends inclined to visit gossiping in every direction. He muses during a restful watch breath coming in spasms of sweat shifting one foot to another dear one to soon call lunch one more sweep should complete morning's task and he does with a burst of finality.
