The Ten Commandments for Children
by Kaye Swain We all know that teaching the 10 commandments to our kids is important. It's not so much a question of should we do it as HOW do we do it? If your children go to a Christian school, they'll most likely learn them in their Bible class. But it's still important for you to teach them at home to reinforce what they are learning. For that matter, you can start working on them when they are preschoolers. It's a great foundation set of encouraging Bible verses! And there are so many fun ways to teach these important Bible memory verses to our children. I love to use cute country clipart to make pictures with the Bible memory verses on them to help them see the words as we read the verses out loud together. You could easily make your own set and print it out in color to hang on bedroom and bathroom walls. You could then print another set out in black and white and use that as cute Ten Commandments coloring pages for your children. Research has proven that the more ways we teach something to kids - writing it, reading it out loud, touching it, etc. - the better they learn it. I am always on the lookout for good books and praise and worship music to reinforce Bible memory lessons I am sharing with my own grand kids. Would you believe it, there are more than one Ten Commandments song for children. How fun! And yes, there are more than one good book out there as well to help you. Repetition is, of course, the key component in it all. Anytime we are working on Bible memory verses for the children, I read the verse to them at least three times every day we are together. I try to encourage them to say it out loud at least once. On some days, I get there too late and they are too tired. But they are always good about listening to me say the Bible verses. And guess what! By the end of the week, they almost always know them by heart! It really makes a difference. Reading these Bible memory verses, coloring them, writing them, repeating them, and singing them together. These are the building blocks that will lead to your children successfully hiding God's Word in their hearts for a lifetime. And what special family memories you are building at the same time. Isn't that a wonderful way of "storing up treasures in heaven!"
