How About Those Walleyes?
by Donald Mehl There are days when I have way too much fun. Today was another one of those days. My most recent fun times began last year after I bought a cheap, lightweight, windbreaker jacket to wear on cool days, and also while I'm out on the lake. The jacket happens to have a large Minnesota Twins logo sewn on it. Okay...You need to know that I'm not much of a baseball fan. Minnesota Twins baseball games are not something I even think about. I might watch a couple of the World Series games, but that's about it. I simply bought a jacket for fishing...but, it happened to have that Twins logo stuck on it. However, that is where the fun begins. Almost every time I wear the jacket out in public, a humorous conversation develops, and goes something like this: "Hey, a Twins fan! All right!!! How about that game last night? Wasn't that a good one?" "Well, I didn't see the game, but I had heard they won." "Oh, wow! You should have seen it. They won big time. Best game of the year! How about those Twins, eh?" "That's great. Who did they play?" "What do you mean, 'Who did they play?' They beat the number one team! It was a real pitcher's dual right to the end. Who do you think will pitch tonight?" "Well, I couldn't even guess. I really don't know the names of their pitchers." Note: This is usually the point in the conversation when I begin to receive the strange looks. "Say...I'll bet you're new to Minnesota, aren't you? Where are you from, anyway? Which team is your favorite?" "Well, actually...I've lived here for 50 years. I'm not a Twins fan. In fact, I don't care much for baseball. This is just my fishing jacket. How about those walleyes, eh?" "Huh???" Note: With that...the conversation usually comes to an abrupt halt. During retirement, my prayer is that I might serve the Lord by sharing the Gospel through my writing. As the Lord leads, my work will inform, challenge and encourage.
