A Ton of Smiles
by Richard L. Provencher

Our neighbour's son
is a half-pint
less than four feet tall,
steps outside his apartment
mom close behind.

The little guy
sniffs the air like a fox
checks the sky,
--look mom, it's raining.

Such a statement
from one so young,
learned to put together
words like a puzzle,
lifts his kindergarten pack
and with a swing
in his walk
saunters over to the car.

Yes, the little fellow
owns the world at five,
and I'm glad to see it so.

Richard L. Provencher
