THEN AND NOW
by Olawale Ogunsola

Then,
God, gracious and merciful,
Slow to anger and abundant
In loving-kindness

One who relents from doing harm,
Sent His two angels to a land,
That was well watered everywhere;
Like the garden of the Lord,
Like the land of Egypt.
That is the land of Sodom and Gomorrah!

The message then was simple,
"Escape for your life!"
The Lord, who would not destroy
The righteous with the wicked,
Was merciful to four:
Lot, his wife and two daughters

They all escaped to the plain,
Later to the mountain,
Except Lot's wife who was
Not in Sodom and Gomorrah,
But the city was in her.

Lot's wife "looked back and she
Became a pillar of salt"
Although she escaped the rain
of brimstone and fire,
She did not reach the mountain.

Now,
God that greatly loved the world,
Has given His only begotten son,
That whosoever believes in Him
Shall not perish but live.

The son has come indeed,
With life abundance,
Peace, full joy and rest.

A great number will not heed,
Waiting for peril to come;
Their song, only song is
"Pleasure, pleasure, pleasure now"

A group seems to fear,
They fear the wrath to come,
They look like freemen,
Out of dungeon of Satan

These are truly in the world,
They live like little children
of the world,
They have the world living in them,
Although they looked like pilgrims
On the way to eternal life

Like Lot's lover,
That turned "a pillar of salt"
These that live in the world,
In pleasure and for pleasure,
Are dead while they are alive

Will they reach home above?
Yes, if they repent now,
Uproot the love of the world,
And pleasure in them;
And replace it with the love of God!

After all "no one having put his hand
On the plow, and looking back, is fit
For the kingdom of God
