State Your Case
by PamFord Davis Audiences have been faithful fans of courtroom scenes for decades. Perry Mason drew movie-goers in theaters long before he made his way to their living room screens. We like to see mysteries unraveled, witnesses questioned, defense and prosecution embattled, the guilty tried and punished, and innocent cleared with the foreman of jury's declaration, "We find the defendant not guilty." Close your eyes and try to imagine God's courtroom "LISTEN TO WHAT the Lord is saying to his people: Stand up and state your case against me. Let the mountains and hills be called to witness your complaint. And now, O mountains, listen to the Lord's complaint! For he has a case against his people Israel! He will prosecute them to the full. O my people, what have I done that makes you turn away from me? Tell me why your patience is exhausted! Answer me (Micah 6:1-3 Living Bible)!" How can I complain to my maker? I do not have a case that would stand up in any court; nature would be called in by the prosecution with an ironclad story of his deliverance and faithfulness to keep his promises. Each mountain would bow in recognition of his glory and my repeated turning away from him when it seemed he delayed answering my prayers. How could I answer him? I have no defense; "the defense rests" your honor.
