The New Me
by Richard L. Provencher

Sometimes tears fall, sometimes the
knife is really words that hurt

and when pain becomes a salve
for the hurting, I cry---

nights are lonesome as a mourning
dove seeking the right one

wishing to join two hearts, calling
upon the nightly winds---

tomorrow an arrow, piercing and
probing the strength I feel.

When it comes like a runaway train
I'll smile, even if a knife is

the price of pain.
