Natalee
by Melissa Martin

Natalee, the world longs to find you
And drop you into mother's awaiting arms.

Natalee, fathers everywhere ache to protect you
And save their own daughters and stepdaughters.

Natalee, your family holds your picture to their chest
And screams for evenhanded justice.

Natalee, your siblings hunker down in your bedroom
And sob perennial tears for their sister.

Natalee, your friends yearn to turn back the clock
And see one more of your dazzling smiles.

Natalee, your high school teachers are forever changed
And they see your face in the crowd.

Natalee, your homeland mourns for you
And sheds heartrending tears for a safe return.

Natalee, people of faith pray for you
And besiege God for answers, but God sees where you are.

Natalee, the days, weeks, and months go by
And we vomit anger at your captors.

Natalee, your disappearance shocked us
And we hug our daughters tighter.

Melissa writes about the God and human connection and condition.
