Forgiving Self [Abortion]
by Melissa Martin

Unmarried woman,
Scared and alone.

Empty womb-empty cradle,
A legal abortion.

Hearing babies cry in the night,
Consumed with loss and sadness.

Haunted by birthday parties,
Holiday melancholy.

Going on with life,
Burying the past.

Forty years later,
Abortion anniversary.

Longing for her phantom child,
A suicide attempt brings her to therapy.

Vomiting guilt and purging self-hatred,
Regret permeates her existence.

Angry at pro-choice for devaluing life,
Angry at pro-life for judging her soul.

Giving her unborn baby a name,
Etched on a belated headstone.

Forgiving self.

I choose to let go of guilt.
I choose to move beyond grieving.
I choose inner serenity.

Melissa writes about the God and human connection and condition.
