Water in the Wilderness
by PamFord Davis I marvel at the tenacity of America's pioneers who trod the nation's mountains and desolate desert as they traveled from the New England states to California. They faced daily challenges and unforeseen danger with brave hearts and renewed resolve; the trek was worth the tests. I have made trips out west enjoying the modern comforts of automobiles and it is still not a journey for the faint-in-heart. The arid desert is especially foreboding. As I viewed mile after mile of barren desert from the passenger side of my vehicle, uneasiness mounted as I saw roadside areas of clearly marked undrinkable water for overheated cars and trucks. No one wants car trouble anywhere or anytime, but a breakdown in the desert is far more than an inconvenience and annoyance; it could cost a person their life if an undependable transport strands them in triple digit temperatures. California's wayside watering holes, though eyesores on the landscape, serve troubled travelers on their way to fertile valleys. God led His people through the wilderness from Egypt to the Promised Land. "Yet I am the Lord thy God from the land of Egypt, and thou shalt know no god but me; for there is no savior beside me. I did know thee in the wilderness, in the land of great drought. According to their pasture, so they were filled; they were filled, and their heart was exalted; therefore have they forgotten me (Hosea 13:5-6 KJV)." Living water was in their midst; spiritual watering holes were ignored and in foolishness they abandoned the Lord God.
