Second Chance, Drug Addiction
by Melissa Martin

Fear drives her to treatment.
A young-old woman afraid of death,
A mother who desperately wants to live
to raise her children and know her grandchildren.

Her body and mind a casualty of cocaine;
perennial sinus infections, brittle hair,
inescapable depression, horrendous anxiety,
self-loathing, hopelessness.

But this is a distinctive fear

Recently she did what she swore she would never do and prostituted her body for crack rocks.
She requests a test for AIDS. The nurse swabs her mouth and tells her to come back in two weeks.

Bargaining with God, she promises to stop snorting if her AIDS test is negative. She gives up her crack pipe and signs up for group therapy. She swears upon the altar of AA and the Big Blue Book. Fear rules.

Two weeks later, she timidly arrives early,
Her husband and children dropped her off.
The nurse closes the door behind them.
Later, she stops in my office to share the results.

Melissa writes about the God and human connection and condition.
