by Melissa Martin

Do you suffer with family stress? Take this quiz to find the answer.

1. Is your home more like:
a. a zoo
b. a hospital
c. a correctional institution
d. a relaxing resort

2. Is family mealtime more like:
a. a festival
b. a hockey game
c. a funeral
d. a relaxing picnic

3. Is the morning bathroom routine more like:
a. a fraternity party
b. American gladiators
c. an army drill
d. a relaxing ritual

4. Are the family weekends more like:
a. a rock concert
b. a riot
c. a platoon inspection
d. a relaxing vacation

Now, add up your score. If you find many of the A-letters in your score, the family is having too much fun and needs more rules. If you find many of the B-letters, your family interaction is too intense and conflict management is needed. If you find many of the C-letters, your family has too many rules and regulations and needs to lighten up. If you picked all D-letters, congratulations, you have the only perfect family in America and you're suffering with delusions of grandeur!

The key to reducing family stress is to cultivate a balance based on mutual respect, forgiveness, and taking turns. Conflict is a part of life, but the key is learning how to solve problems without excessive anger, yelling, calling names, and attacking each other's character flaws. Family communication is based on listening, talking calmly, and having a concrete plan for settling disputes. Putting humor in the family is a positive way to reduce stress!
