Girls Are, Therefore They Shop
by Melissa Martin

The Census says there are about 30 million teenagers in the United States. That's a lot of shopping! Last year, teens spent billions on cosmetics, clothing, and other fashion items. Shopping should be an Olympic event for girls.

My daughter is the queen of the Abercrombie & Fitch generation. Before we go to the mall, I go to the backyard and pick several dollars off of my money tree. Never fall for the teen line of "Mom, just give me your credit card and you can stay home and rest." I think my teen is psychic because she always knows how much money is left in my billfold. When she says "bye" she really means "buy."

I think there is a mall conspiracy in America to target teenage shoppers and it's working! Subsequently, the biggest cardinal sin is expecting your teen to buy the same dress as another teen in her high school or surrounding area. The other cardinal sin is expecting her to wear the same outfit to a different school event.

Teenage girls think moms are fashion-impaired. That's why moms are ignored when their daughters are in a crowd of friends. My daughter has threatened to call the fashion police if I don't stop wearing baggy sweatpants. I've often accused her closet of gobbling up clothes because she never has a thing a wear. My old story about wearing hand-me-downs doesn't even make her blink anymore.

Teenagers and malls go together like apple pie and ice cream. It's now an American tradition. Girls are and therefore they shop!
