LEN'S LINES -- A Little Religion On A Positive Note By Leonard Granger

Christmas Is All Around Us

It is that time of year, Christmas, and it gives us a great feeling. We see Christmas lights on many of our homes and we see Christmas wreaths on doors everywhere. Beautiful Christmas trees brightly shining out of windows reflect the love of our families and the Christmas spirit. As we see our local businesses decorated and the Christmas lighting the city has installed, it reminds us of all the wonderful things people do at Christmastime.

We help with Toys For Tots, warm coats for our children and Christmas meals for our seniors, as we share with others in the Christmas tradition of love thy neighbor as a brother. We see the thousands of hero's graves decorated with Christmas wreaths at our local Sacramento Valley VA Cemetery, as we remember those that have given so much to protect our freedoms.

Christmas brings out the best in us as we think back on all the wonderful times we have enjoyed with family, friends, and the interesting strangers we meet at Christmas gatherings. Hot chocolate and cookies help keep us warm as we join others singing Christmas carols to the homebound, but the Christmas spirit and a warm coat keeps us going.

We see our local churches celebrating Christmas with special services and helping those in their time of need. Yes, Christmastime is when we reflect on the true meaning of Christmas, as we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

The English word Christmas means Christ's Mass, the festival of our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ which we celebrate on December 25th each year. The first Christmas celebration was recorded in 336AD and started by the Romans as the known world under their control became Christians.

When someone greats us with Happy Holidays, we are quick to respond with Merry Christmas.

We hope the wonderful Christmas spirit remains with us all through the coming year as we look forward to the challenges and the blessings we will all be facing in our wonderful community. Trust we will all be in the church of our choice worshiping and praising our Lord this Sunday. God Bless America
