The Empty Mansion
by Marilyn Schnepp

An angel was talking to the Lord one day,
As they walked in heaven beside the bay.
"Look, my Lord", the angel said,
Then pointed to a mansion on a hill up ahead!

"Now there is a mansion of class and style!
And the only one like it for many a mile.
But tell me, Lord, who lives there?
Why does it seem so empty and bare?"

The Lord looked up at the house on the hill,
At the magnificent mansion so quiet and still;
Then tears filled His eyes, and He bowed His head,
Was silent a moment - and then He said:

"Yes, my angel, it's a special design,
It was custom-made for a child of mine.
She specifically asked for a home by the sea
Where she could live for Eternity.

"She loved the sound of the ocean's roar
As white-capped waves rolled into shore.
And loved to feel the rhythmic beat
As surf met sand beneath her feet.

"So often on Earth she'd go to the sea
Whenever she needed to talk with me.
She'd stroll alone on the sunlit sand.
And I would reach down and take her hand.

"Yes", He continued, "I loved her so!
And she never owned a home you know.
So I built her home overlooking the sea
Where I knew she'd be happy, content and free.

"But when it came time to call her home,
She'd chosen the world with it's glitter and chrome!
So you see, my angel, it's an empty shrine,
Just an old memory or that child of mine."

All of a sudden I awoke with a start!
The only sound was the beat of my heart!
Oh! That beautiful mansion on a cliff by the sea
Was only a dream, but it was mine, you see!

So I made up my mind right then and there,
My Mansion would NOT stand empty and bare!
So I got out of bed and knelt in prayer -
And promised my Lord I'd meet Him up there!"
