Our Walk of Faith
by Steve Countryman

2 Corinthians 5:7 For we walk by faith, not by sight. Having grown up in the church this is a phrase that I have heard time and time again. I thought I fully understood it, I was wrong! Recently the Lord shared with me some very obvious things that we as Christians miss too often when it comes to our faith walk. It always hits me our often I get distracted. How many times I have taken my eyes off of the Lord and stared at my own troubles instead. It is like having a spoiled brat child yelling your name non-stop at the top of his lungs trying to get your attention. Typically it is never over something important but mostly trivial or "how to make a mountain out of a mole hill". Of course once having got your attention he wants to keep your attention so other means are employed. This all becomes a major distraction. That is what happens to us as Christians when we take our eyes off of the Lord and start looking elsewhere. Now our attention and focus is not where it should be and you find yourself on the wrong path. Trusting your own wisdom and knowledge rather than trusting in God will put you there.

To put it simply, when you walk by sight YOU are constantly looking at where you are going. You check to see if any thing is in your way. You always stop and look back at where you have been, wondering how you ever got this lost. Every time you look at your past, your mistakes, your failures, your bad decisions you always get stuck looking at your past and reliving it. It often times will keep from moving forward or making any kind of real progress. The entire process is all based on you trusting only in you and your sight or field of vision. There are detours and luring paths along the way that branch off of your path that promise sinful fun and pleasure but never tell of the cost. Every time you try one of those paths you find out too late that it only leads you in the wrong direction and always leads you to destruction. Those are the paths of sin and temptation.

But when your walk is a walk of faith then your eyes are only on Father God, always up and never down or away. Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, (putting your faith and trust in yourself and your own sight); 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Psalm 119:133 Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me. Psalm 37:23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, and He delights in his way. Proverbs 16:9 A man's heart plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps. Your trust and faith is in your God and your eyes are always on Him. When you can surrender and commit all of your ways and will to God then you can walk by faith and not by sight. For God knows the best paths for you to take and always looks out for you and for your good. Your faith walk is a walk of faith in your God!
