Christians and Divorce - Make Your Life Yours By Changing Your Environment
by Karla Downing

Christians find divorce to be a painful experience even when they wanted the divorce. One of the most painful aspects is letting go of the old life and starting a new life. There are thousands of reminders of your life with your ex. You need to figure out how to make a new life for yourself.

There is one thing you can do that can go a long way toward making your life yours: Change your environment. You may not be able to move to a new house, but there are plenty of other things you can do:

1. Replace the things your spouse took as soon as possible. Don't live without things you need.

2. Get painful reminders out of your house: pictures of the two of you, gifts, and things with special memories.

3. Change the bedding in the bedroom: buy new sheets, blankets, and a bedspread to make it feminine or masculine.

4. Put clothing in the closet on the side your spouse had clothing and take his/her clothing out if it is still there.

5. Rearrange furniture.

6. Buy new sofa pillows, new dishes, new towels, and new pictures.

7. Make your surroundings nurturing, inviting, personal, and different.

"Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!" (Isaiah 43:18, NIV). There is a time to purposefully let go of the past and focus on the future. Christians going through divorce can look to the years ahead knowing that God can give them a future filled with new possibilities. God expects you to do what you can do to build that new life. Changing your environment is easy; it doesn't have to be expensive; and it will help you to make your life yours.
