John Doe
by PamFord Davis

Hearing tags of John or Jane Doe nearly result in chills down my back. I ponder how many times in a lifetime a person answers a three-word question: "What's your name?" Even youngsters know the answer. I remember my first day of kindergarten; Mom pinned my name to my sweater before I boarded the big yellow bus taking me to the unknown world of school. As a conscientious mother, she wanted to be positive my bus driver and teacher would know my identity.

God needs to check no name tags or identification papers; he knows my name. "Hear me, people by the sea. Listen to me, you faraway nations. The Lord called me before I was born. He called my name while I was still in my mother's womb (Isaiah 49:1 ERV)." Isaiah was not suffering from an identity crisis. He answered when spoken to by his sovereign God. I can visualize him waving his hand high above his head, gazing into his heavenly Father's eyes and crying out, "Present!"
