Shake the Heavens
by PamFord Davis

In frustration, many fathers have sternly corrected their child with words of warning: "I wish I could shake some sense into you!" In recent years, health experts have revealed that shaking a baby leads to brain damage. I do confess that there are times I act as if I have no sense at all. We could all use a good dose of common sense.

Sensing our rebellion and clouded thinking, God has a message for us from the prophet, Haggai. "Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I will shake the heavens of the earth; and I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the heathen (Haggai 2:21-22a KJV)."

Almighty God, in his mercy, holds back destruction. His strength is unmatched. He can shake the heavens or part the seas with his outstretched arm. I ponder his patience with me and sense his righteous anger. He is justified in all disciplinary action. "Shake me; wake me from sin induced slumber."
