Storms
by Paulette Winter

Swirling winds blow suddenly around us. Trees are bending as if purposely bowing to a greater force. Leaves and limbs race across yards and roads.

Birds soar upward to heights beyond the storm.

Lightning zags across the sky and thunder boomerangs from clouds to earth and to clouds again.

Rain pelts town and country, mingling with hail that respects nothing.

A kalidescope of purples, reds, and blacks transforms the sky. It appears that nature has lost control.

Electric lines have no choice but to fall as trees, big and small, pull them down or wrap them around.

Man and beast stop as the fury resounds. Then, bathed in silence and darkness frantic whispers are heard. "Are you okay?" and the storm moves on.

Sirens fill the air and the rescue begins.

A storm can suddenly appear out of nowhere to any one of us. It can leave us brutally pounded and torn. Disaster is most often the result, not only storms agains the earth, but also storms against our lives.

Are not disease, death, and divorce equally destructive to our sense of well being? Do they not arrive unannounced and with no respect?
